SPRING SESSION 2: March 31 - May 19, 2025
This course is an examination of color theory through the practical application of mixing paint on the artist palette. The structure of this course is designed to present the theory of color while helping artists build specific color relationships in the foundational stage of the painting process. Students will negotiate the contradictions between color as theory and its physical realities by working directly with the material of oil paint.
The course will help students to develop their comprehension and control of color wheel organization, made of the three primary subtractive color contrasts- Tone, Hue and Saturation. Study will also include complementary pairs as both opposites and gradients. Mixing scales of color transitions, harmonies and discords. Properties of oil paint; painting mediums, including variations in viscosity, extending or reducing drying time.
We will also study how palette organization translates into pictorial elements of painting through study and analysis of master paintings. How conditions of light, atmosphere, mood, location, time, content and meaning are all extensions of color relationships worked out in the mixing on the palette before the painter applies color to canvas.
Geared for beginners, but open to students of all levels.

Having a bold black printed outline stands out more with other mediums and the entire artwork becomes crisp and tight. Carving requires good patience during production, but the result is absolutely rewarding. How ink embodies your plate in two-dimensional artwork is a surprise, and it’s one of the beauties of printmaking.
Open to all students. No printmaking experience is needed.

SPRING SESSION 2: March 31 - May 19, 2025
This course will explore what we as artists can do for our art after the art is made. How to get our art out of the studio and into the world. How to get others, other than ourselves, to care about the art that we have made.
Applying for opportunities, residencies, grants, approaching galleries is certainly a part of this, also promoting on Instagram, we will learn about these. But also, a Do-It-Yourself attitude can take us way beyond established norms. Some have said that art is not art until it is exhibited, so how to take control of this aspect of art production? How to factor into our self conception not only making art but its distribution, its curation? Finishing the painting, or sculpture, or photograph is just the beginning, how then to install it, where and with whom?
We shall explore historical examples of artists who circumnavigated the status quo to get their work seen, most specifically 19th-century painter Gustave Courbet who is considered the first Modern partially due to how he addressed these questions as an artist. We shall visit artist-run spaces in the New York City area and meet the people behind these, often, communal situations. We shall explore commercial and non-profit financing and the legalities that come with self-starter endeavors. How to help ourselves while helping our fellow artists? How to create art as well as a context, a scene, a platform? How, indeed, to make art function not only in the studio but in the world?

Making a Maquette for Contemporary Sculpture
Kathryn Cameron
Tuesdays, 6 – 8 pm (Spring, 2025)
4-day workshop, $300
A maquette is a model made as an initial draft to help with planning before starting a sculpture. It is used to help visualize the overall form, determine proportions, add details, and explore technical considerations.
Maquette-making is a fantastic way to experiment with form, scale, and structure without immediately committing to a full-scale piece. Working with inexpensive materials encourages creativity and allows artists to take risks and play with different ideas and techniques. It can benefit those looking to refine their vision and problem-solve any technical challenges before diving into a larger project.
Join us for a this 4 – week workshop where we will investigate the many maquette making techniques used to evaluate the potential of 3-dimensional works.

Cardboard, Hot Glue/Glue Gun, Scissors/xacto knife, Cutting Mat, Sketch pad, pencils
White Line Woodcut Workshop
Judy Mensch
3 Saturdays, 1 pm - 4 pm (Spring 2025)
$250
White line woodcut was developed in the early 1900s in Provincetown, MA, by a group of artists, including Blanche Lazzell, who sought an alternative to traditional Japanese woodblock printing. In this workshop, you will learn the essentials of registration, transferring drawings, and carving linear drawings into Shina plywood woodblocks.
We will use non-toxic watercolor and/or gouache to print color areas, with each color being printed multiple times to achieve transparent or opaque hues. Instead of a press, we will use a Baren and/or a tablespoon for printing, allowing for the creation of textured and painterly prints with multiple colors on one block.
This technique is designed so you can continue your printing at home without needing a press. For the first class, please bring your own drawings, photos, and other reference materials as inspiration for your initial print image.
Open to all levels.
Art Supplies for First Class:
• Drawings, photos, and reference source material. This will be used to create your first woodcut drawing, 4 x 7 inches.
• Ultra Fine Point Sharpie for drawing ideas
